General Statement Of Duties

The Deputy State Court Administrator works closely with the State Court Administrator, Chief Justice, Supreme Court, and other executives of the Colorado Judicial Department to support the strategic administration of the Department and the operations of the State Court Administrator’s Office (SCAO). The position reports to the State Court Administrator and has direct supervision, including day-to-day decision-making authority, over one or more divisions at SCAO. The Deputy State Court Administrator may serve as the Acting State Court Administrator at the direction of the Chief Justice when the State Court Administrator is temporarily unable to perform their duties. The Deputy State Court Administrator is responsible for ensuring effective collaboration among the divisions at SCAO. The Deputy State Court Administrator is a liaison to advisory working groups and committees of justices, judges and administrators that provide recommendations and advice for policymaking, business practices, and service delivery. The Deputy State Court Administrator serves at the pleasure of the State Court Administrator.

  • Advises the State Court Administrator on mission critical strategic and operational issues that support the Judicial Department’s constitutional and statutory administrative responsibilities.   
  • Supervises one or more divisions of the State Court Administrator’s Office and has day-to-day decision-making authority over those divisions. Helps ensure operational and strategic collaboration among all SCAO divisions in support of the Judicial Department’s strategic plan.
  • Supports implementation of the rules and policies of the Supreme Court as they apply to court administration.  
  • Develops and promotes statewide administrative practices and procedures. Examines the administrative and business methods employed in the courts and probation and makes recommendations for improvements. 
  • Supports the preparation, review, and submission of the Colorado Judicial Department Budget.  Assists with developing and implementing the Department’s legislative strategy.   
  • Serves as a liaison for the Colorado Judicial Department with the legislative and executive branches as well as other public and private groups having an interest in the administration of the courts and probation. Represents the courts and probation in administrative matters with others such as law enforcement, news media, committees, planning groups and the general public. 
  • Presents to outside groups, associations, conferences and workshops. 
  • Attends, on behalf of the Supreme Court and State Court Administrator, various state and national conferences, trainings and meetings. Serves on commissions, committees and panels involved in matters affecting court administration. 
  • Initiates, designs, develops and implements contemporary business practices and management practices for the Colorado Judicial Department. 
  • Attends meetings and completes training as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisor Responsibilities

Work requires managing and monitoring work performance of an organizational unit or key work area including evaluating program/work objectives and effectiveness, establishing broad organizational goals and realigning work and staff assignments for the functional area.

Minimum Education

Education and Experience Equivalency:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, judicial administration, public administration or related field.
OR
Additional work experience in these or other related fields may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required formal education.               

Work-Relate Experience:
At least six (6) year of work-related experience with progressive responsibility in legal administration and or related judicial experience.
