About the Colorado Court of Appeals

The Colorado Court of Appeals is the state's intermediate appellate court. As of July 1, 2008, the Court consists of 22 judges who are retained by the public to serve eight-year terms. The Court sits in three-member divisions to decide cases. The Chief Judge, appointed by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, assigns judges to the divisions and rotates their assignments. The mission of the Court of Appeals is to provide the citizens of Colorado with clear, impartial, and timely resolutions of appealed orders and judgments as provided by law. The Court of Appeals was created by statute; accordingly, jurisdiction is limited to the areas specified by state statute, together with the inherent powers granted to all courts.

Oral Arguments are set in the Ralph Carr Building unless an order for remote oral arguments has been issued in the case.  Please review the Forms and Policies Page to find the Court of Appeals Current Policy on requesting remote oral arguments.

The Colorado Court of Appeals Jurisdiction

Established under Section 1 of Article VI of the Colorado Constitution and Section 13-4-101, et seq., C.R.S. (Colorado Revised Statutes), the Court of Appeals has initial jurisdiction, with exceptions, over appeals from the Colorado District Courts, Denver Probate Court, and Denver Juvenile Court. In addition, the Court of Appeals has specific appellate jurisdiction over decisions originating from a number of state administrative boards and agencies, including the Industrial Claim Appeals Office. Reviews of the Court of Appeals’ decisions are directed to the Colorado Supreme Court.

Visiting the Court of Appeals

Oral arguments in both the Colorado Supreme Court and the Colorado Court of Appeals are open to the public, and members of the public always are welcome to visit both courts, which are on the first, third, and fourth floors of the Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center, or may listen to oral arguments on our livestream link or archive link.  Live and Archives of Court of Appeals Oral Arguments.

Colorado Appellate Court Self-Help Center

The Self-Help Center will be unavailable for assistance on the following dates and times:

• Thursday, October 1, 2026 – unavailable after 11:00 AM
• Monday, October 5, 2026 – state holiday
• Wednesday, October 7, 2026
• Thursday, October 8, 2026

The Self-Help Center is also unavailable on state holidays.  

Our office assists self-represented litigants in civil matters only with general procedures and forms for the Colorado Court of Appeals, using resources available on the Colorado Judicial Branch website.

Our schedule is Monday through Thursday:

  • Walk-Ins: 10:00–11:00 AM
  • Lunch: 12:00–1:00 PM
  • Walk-Ins: 1:00–3:00 PM

Call 720-625-5107 to make sure coordinator is in the office.  If you cannot come during the walk-in hours, please contact the coordinator to schedule an appointment: appeals.selfhelp@judicial.state.co.us.

Please note: This schedule is unavailable on the third Thursday of every month due to staff participation in the CBA’s monthly civil appeals clinic.
